Fall Leadership Conference
Friday, November 16th 2018

Naugatuck Valley Community College
750 Chase Parkway; Waterbury, CT 06708

The theme is “Tobacco Awareness”. Our keynote speaker is Dan Fitzgerald. He is 22 years old and was born and raised in the State of Rhode Island. Dan now works for the American Lung Association as Director of Tobacco Free Rhode Island and has over ten years of tobacco control experience. His educational background is in prevention science, marketing, nonprofit management, and public health. Dan began his journey in tobacco control and prevention at the age of 12 as a youth advocate in his community and for the state soon after.

After founding a local nonprofit in his tri-town area and working with a federally funded prevention coalition, Dan took his passion to affect change to the federal level and began working for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA) where he helped oversee substance use prevention services for Rhode Island. During his two year tenor with SAMHSA, Dan became a part of the Truth Initiative Youth Activism Fellowship. During his fellowship, he was able to work with 30 other young professionals to change the culture of tobacco use across the nation. He also implemented a presentation based project in his state which ended up engaging over 21,000 people via social media in a 4 month period, activated over 1,900 youth and young adults in face-to-face trainings, and mobilized nearly 500 young people at a state-wide advocacy event. After completing his fellowship, Dan now serves as a consultant and mentor for the next round of Youth Activism Fellows and is a spokesperson for the national organization.

Workshops include:
Mental health awareness and how HOSA members can help. Our overarching HOSA Service Project for last year and this year is NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness)

Bunnell/Stratford High H.O.S.A.'s Juvenile Diabetes Fair was on Wednesday, February 2 at the Stratford Library Lovell Room from 6:30-8:00 PM. Guest exhibitionists included Bridgeport Hospital, Yale, Nature's Way Health Foods, JDRF Foundation, Fitness Edge, and more! This event was a wonderful way to learn more about BOTH Type I and Type II diabetes, as well as methods of prevention and disease management. Please refer to stratford.patch.com for a write-up on the event with images.

Bunnell HOSA participated in CT's State Conference on Thursday, March 31st. Rosangelica Figueroa and Derrick Afrifra were elected CT State Secretary and Parliamentarian, respectively, for the 2011-2012 scademic year! Bunnell came through with "Oustanding HOSA Chapter" for putting together a scrapbook of the past year. Additionally, Bunnell members placed in competitions like Creative Problem Solving and Job Seeking Skills. Senior Ryne Pataki assisted in running the conference with fellow board members, CJ Cordero, Brittney Garvey, Socheata Lim, and Priscilla Maldonado.

Bunnell HOSA is beginning its new year with a fantastic start. 40+ students have become regular members! This is great considering the loss of many members in last year's senior class.

The CT State Leadership Conference has been announced for December 3rd at Gateway Community College in North Haven. A new policy this year allows for officers, as well as additional members to be in attendance. Amy Gallimore will be the keynote speaker and available workshops include leadership training, health career pathways and nursing lab visit, radiologic technology and nutrition, exercise science and welleness and predental hygiene, as well as a juvenile diabtes roundtable discussion.

We hope to have some chapter pictures/a viewbook of the chapter scrapbook from last year's state competition online soon.

The chapter is currently in the planning stages for a service project on the topic of juvenile diabetes (national HOSA's cause for this year). A guest speaker will be at a meeting on November 8th from a local juvenile diabetes nonprofit. This speaker will introduce the group to all aspects of juvenile diabetes and help plan the project.

Other fundraising has been successful and will include activity at the next three home football games.

1/2011:

The Fall Leadership Conference proved to be a great success! Students most enjoyed the patient simulations facilitated by the nursing department at Gateway. Additionally, the guest speaker, Amy Gallimore, was praised for her enthusiastic spirit and comprehensive leaderhip training. Her stories had the entire room laughing and working as a unit. BUNNELL HOSA IS PROUD TO HAVE CONTRIBUTED THE POPULARLY VOTED CT STATE HOSA THEME FOR THIS YEAR! (In service we believe and together we acheive.)

The Health and Medical Careers classes at Bunnell (including some of our H.O.S.A. members) successfully completed a Learn and Serve project in December at a local middle school. Each team designed an interactive presentation on an important health topic for local youth.

A joint effort with Stratford High School is scheduled for February. YHSC will be assisting our two H.O.S.A. chapters in creating a Juvenile Diabetes fair and information session with the potential for mass community media coverage.

For those interested in joining or becoming involved with the BHS HOSA chapter: email hosa.bhs@gmail.com, rynepataki@optonline.net, or signorm@stratfordk12.org. You may also call the Bunnell main office at 203-385-4250.

Bunnell HOSA is  participating in the October 24th Breat Cancer Awareness walk at Sherwood Island State Park, as it does every year. Members will be fundraising so that the chapter can contribute a donation to the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Foundation (American Cancer Society).

LEARN AND SERVE PROJECT: April 17th at the Bridgeport YMCA. Members will be creating a sort of mini-field day in cooperation with a youth health and nutrition day hosted by the YMCA and local organizations. A special thanks to SW AHEC for their help in planning and getting this project off the ground!

BHS H.O.S.A. is proud to partner with Southwestern AHEC in providing youth with excellent health-related opportunities. SW AHEC is one of four AHEC centers in CT and is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization. Bunnell is proud to be a part of AHEC's most active center to date!

MISSION: To enchance access to quality primary and preventive healthcare in Southwestern Connecticut by linking students, providers and families through education, workforce development and community collaborations.

Also, Bunnell H.O.S.A. participated in the 2010 State H.O.S.A. conference on March 30th at Southwestern CT State University. Bunnell H.O.S.A. had success in the Creative Problem Solving, EMT and CPR skills, Outstanding HOSA chapter (scrapbook), and creative health display. Additionally, Ryne Pataki was elected the state secretary for the upcoming year.
